Beppu has four local specialties: tori-ten (deep-fried chicken tempura), Beppu reimen (cold noodles), jigoku-mushi pudding (steamed in volcanic steam) and dango-jiru (dumpling and vegetable soup). Toyoken, the restaurant where tori-ten was created, is closed on the second Tuesday of every month and has parking for 60 cars. Okamotoya, home of the original jigoku-mushi pudding, sells it for ¥486 to take away or ¥495 to eat in, open 8:30 to 18:30. Rokusei’s Matsubara main shop switches to lunch-only hours from October 1, 2026. Here are the prices, hours and closing days for six shops, translated from our Japanese guide.

In short

  • Tori-ten started at Toyoken. Restaurant Ribbon is open until 23:00 on weekends, so it also works after dinner (section 1).
  • Rokusei’s Matsubara main shop becomes lunch-only (11:00–15:00) from October 1, 2026; its Tokiwa Beppu branch stays open until 18:30 (section 2).
  • Okamotoya’s jigoku-mushi pudding can be taken away and shipped nationwide from its online shop (section 3).
  • Bungo-chaya, inside Beppu Station, is handy if you are waiting for a train (section 4).

Facts are carried over from our Japanese guide, checked September 28, 2026.

1. Tori-ten: Toyoken and Restaurant Ribbon

Depends on the restaurant

Tori-ten is said to have been created in the early Showa era (1920s–30s) at Toyoken, when the founder came up with a dish of thinly sliced local chicken deep-fried in tempura batter. Toyoken is open 11:00–15:30 (last order 15:00) and 17:00–22:00 (last order 21:00); on weekends and holidays, only the original tori-ten and yuzu tori-ten are served between 15:00 and 17:00. It is closed on the second Tuesday of every month, with parking for 60 cars, including large buses. Prices for single dishes and sets are shown as images on Toyoken’s official site, so check the in-shop menu; reservation-only course meals are ¥6,600, ¥8,800 and ¥11,000 (tax included).

Restaurant Ribbon’s tori-ten set is ¥1,600 and a single portion is ¥1,330, according to a menu board it posted on its official Instagram in June 2026 (its official website’s menu page still shows the older ¥1,490/¥1,250). The same board also lists a nanban set for ¥1,700 and a rice-bowl set for ¥1,300. On weekdays it is open 11:00–15:30 and 17:00–23:00 (last order 22:00); on weekends it runs 11:00–23:00 straight through. It closes irregularly.

2. Beppu reimen: Rokusei

Depends on the restaurant

Beppu reimen is a cold-noodle dish made with hand-pulled noodles in a chilled broth. At Rokusei’s Matsubara main shop, reimen is ¥990 for a regular size, ¥1,150 large and ¥1,300 extra-large, and from October 1, 2026 the shop moves to lunch-only hours, 11:00–15:00 (last order 14:45). The shop’s official Instagram says the change is due to the owner’s age and a staff shortage (its official website still lists the old hours of 11:30–14:00 and 18:00–20:00). Service ends when the soup runs out, and the shop is closed every Wednesday; parking information is on the official site. The Tokiwa Beppu branch (basement level) moves to 11:00–18:30 from October 1, and the Oita City branch keeps 11:00–14:00 and 17:00–20:00; both close irregularly.

3. Jigoku-mushi pudding: Okamotoya

Depends on the shop

This pudding is steamed using the natural steam vents of Myoban Onsen. Okamotoya’s version is ¥486 to take away and ¥495 to eat in, open 8:30–18:30 (last order 17:30, eat-in until 18:00), with no closing day. There are custard and coffee flavors, and the official online shop ships nationwide. At “Jigokumushi Kobo Kannawa” in Kannawa, you can bring your own ingredients and steam them yourself; prices and hours are in our Japanese guide to Kannawa’s jigoku-mushi steaming.

4. Dango-jiru: Amami-chaya and Bungo-chaya

Depends on the shop

Dango-jiru is an Oita dish of hand-stretched flat dumplings simmered with vegetables in a miso broth. At Amami-chaya’s Beppu shop, a single bowl is ¥770 (small) or ¥880 (large), and a set meal is ¥1,290 (small) or ¥1,400 (large, tax included), open 10:00–21:00 (last order 20:30) with no closing day. The shop says the nearby “Beppu Amami-chaya Oishi No.2” parking lot can also be used. There is also a branch in Yufuin (open 10:00–17:00).

Bungo-chaya, inside Beppu Station (B-Passage), has a dango-jiru set for ¥1,050 and a tori-ten rice-bowl set for ¥1,000 (tax included), open 10:00–20:00 (last order 19:00). It seats 44 and is a handy stop while waiting for a train.

5. Which one to choose

Toyoken is where tori-ten began, while Restaurant Ribbon stays open until 23:00, so it also works after dinner. Since Rokusei’s Matsubara main shop becomes lunch-only from October, choose the Tokiwa Beppu branch (open to 18:30) if you want reimen in the evening. Okamotoya’s pudding can be taken away, so it also suits people who want to eat it back at their accommodation. For dango-jiru, Bungo-chaya suits a train wait, while Amami-chaya suits sitting down and taking your time.

6. Order it to eat at home (Rakuten Ichiba)

Toyoken’s tori-ten is sold frozen for home delivery, and Beppu reimen and dango-jiru also come as make-at-home kits on Rakuten Ichiba. More Oita specialties you can order online are in our Japanese guide, 23 Oita specialty foods to order online.
