Tempura Dokoro Hirao Main Store: fresh-fried set meals from ¥940, cash only
IllustrationKONOMACHI-note

Landing at Fukuoka Airport, or before a flight home, a tempura set-meal shop is a common candidate for a single quick meal. Tempura Dokoro Hirao Main Store (天麩羅処ひらお 本店), in Higashihirao, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, is one: the official site states “8 directly run shops, all in Fukuoka Prefecture,” and the Main Store sits just east of the airport.

In short

  • No reservations at any Hirao shop — you are seated in order of arrival, and payment is cash only.
  • Set meals run ¥940–¥1,210 (tax included, priced January 2026); the Daimyo and Tenjin Across locations are priced slightly higher.
  • The Main Store is open 10:30–20:00, last order 20:00, closing 20:30.
  • The Kuyama location is closed for renovation from September 1 to mid-November — do not head there by mistake.

1. A set meal you order by name; no reservations, seated in arrival order

According to the official site, Hirao is a tempura specialist built around “ingredients, safety and running its own shops,” with 8 directly run locations across Fukuoka Prefecture (Main Store, Sawara, Kuyama, Kaizuka, Harada, Tenjin Across, Daimyo and Sue). Every shop states the same three rules: seating in order of arrival, no reservations; children’s chairs available and step-free access; cash only. The Main Store also has parking and a frozen-food vending machine (“Do-hiemon”), according to the official shop list. Set meals are chosen by name — the tempura set, for example, contains kisu (sillago), a white fish, a blue-backed fish, squid and three vegetables; the official menu page notes it is the only set that includes saba (mackerel), a blue-backed fish.

2. Set meals from ¥940 to ¥1,210, priced January 2026

The official price list, updated January 2026 (tax included), gives: Okonomi set ¥1,160, tempura set ¥1,060, ajiwai set ¥1,060, tori-ten set ¥1,060, irodori set ¥1,160, itsumo set ¥1,110, atama set (no vegetables) ¥980, vegetable set ¥940, and shrimp set ¥1,210. Only the Daimyo and Tenjin Across locations charge roughly ¥80 more per set; the Main Store uses the prices above. À la carte items include conger eel ¥400, mentaiko ¥350, shrimp ¥250, and white fish, kisu, saba or squid at ¥190 each; vegetables are ¥130 each, rice (regular) ¥230, miso soup ¥110. A medium draft beer is ¥600, a non-alcoholic beer ¥300. Payment is cash only, as stated on the official site.

3. 10:30 to 20:00

According to the official “hours notice” page (posted March 24, 2025), the Main Store’s hours are 10:30–20:00, with a 20:00 order cutoff and 20:30 close. The same page states the Kuyama shop is closed for renovation from September 1 to mid-November. A fixed closed day is not stated on that page. Since there is no booking, plan to arrive with some time to spare. A topics update from September 2, 2025 also notes that the Main Store, Tenjin Across and Sue locations have their own capsule-toy machines.

4. Higashihirao, Hakata Ward; parking on site, no nearest-station listed

The Main Store address is 2-4-1 Higashihirao, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City; phone 092-611-1666. The official shop list states parking is available, but gives no walking time from a station or bus information. It sits just east of Fukuoka Airport, so check a map for the route if you are coming from there. If Tenjin suits you better, there is also a Tenjin Across location, in the basement of ACROS Fukuoka (1-1-1 Tenjin, phone 092-716-5511).

5. Before you go
