You have settled in Kumamoto City and want to meet people outside work or school, or to share your own country with your neighbours. This guide compares the ways to do that at the Kumamoto International Foundation (熊本市国際交流振興事業団, KIF), which runs the Kumamoto City International Center (熊本市国際交流会館): cafe-style talks, a group for parents, a Japanese culture day for foreign residents, and volunteer roles.
In short
- To chat about other countries and cultures, book an International Cafe session. Most cost ¥500, and each one meets about once a month at the International Center.
- The International Cafe is not a Japanese class: the language depends on the cafe, and you need to book first.
- Parents of children aged 0 to 6 can join Hotto Salon on the 4th Thursday of each month (¥100, up to 10 families).
- On Sunday, October 25, 2026, KIF holds a kimono and tea ceremony day for foreign residents (¥1,000, booking needed).
- To give something back, ask KIF about becoming a guest speaker at local schools and community centers. Students can register as KIF student volunteers.

2. International Cafe: talks about other countries
Kumamoto International Foundation
The International Cafe (インターナショナルカフェ) is a series of casual, cafe-style sessions where you learn about the language, culture, customs and travel of other countries, and chat with foreign residents of the city and people with international experience. Each session lasts about an hour and most are held at link Cafe on the 1st floor of the International Center.
It is not a Japanese class. KIF’s page for its Japanese-support volunteers says its Japanese clubs work in Japanese, and suggests the International Cafe for people who want to talk in other languages.
2.1 What kinds of cafe are there?
- Cross-cultural Cafes (異文化カフェ, ¥500): the city’s Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs) introduce Canada, Korea, China and Germany, and foreign residents host other cafes such as the Italy Cafe and the French Language Cafe. In October 2026 there is also a Ukraine Cafe, a four-part series by two people from Ukraine who now live in Kumamoto.
- International Exchange Cafe (国際交流カフェ, ¥500): CIRs discuss a monthly theme with the participants, in Japanese.
- Collabo Cafe (コラボカフェ, ¥500): JICA volunteers and international students talk about the countries where they worked or where they come from. The session pages say anyone can join.
- Kids Cafe (キッズカフェ, free): games and activities with CIRs and foreign residents, for elementary and junior high school students and their parents or guardians.
2.2 What language is it in?
It depends on the cafe and the time. For October 2026, the session pages say the Canada Cafe is in Japanese at 14:00 and in English at 18:30. The China and Korea Cafes are in Japanese at 14:00 and mainly in Chinese or in Korean at 18:30. The Italy Cafe is in English and Italian, the Ukraine Cafe in Japanese and English, and the Germany Cafe and the International Exchange Cafe in Japanese. The French Cafe teaches French that is useful when you travel.

- Saturday, October 24: Collabo Cafe, 14:00–15:00 (Solomon Islands)
KIF says the days are mostly fixed, but they can change because of the host’s schedule or public holidays. Check KIF’s monthly calendar (月間カレンダー) before you go.
2.4 How do I book?
- Choose a session on KIF’s calendar. Each session has its own page with the date, room, fee and capacity (usually about 20 people).
- Open the booking form (専用webフォームで申込む) on the session page. The form is in Japanese. Enter your name (氏名), phone number (電話番号) and email (メールアドレス), choose whether you want an automatic reply (回答の有無 – 回答必要 means yes), pick the session (参加したいカフェ), enter the number of people (参加人数) and type the characters shown in the image (認証キー).
- Or book by phone or email. Call 096-359-2121 or write to koza@kumamoto-if.or.jp.
- On the day, go to the room shown on the session page. Rooms can change, as the Korea Cafe did in October.
The Kids Cafe is for elementary and junior high school students with a parent or guardian. Brothers and sisters aged 5 or over can join too; younger children can watch, and preschool children cannot take part on their own.

3. Hotto Salon: for parents with young children
Kumamoto International Foundation
Hotto Salon (ほっとサロン) is KIF’s Japanese exchange group for foreign parents raising children. Mothers and fathers with children aged 0 to 6 chat over drinks about parenting, learning Japanese and daily life, and sometimes there are picture-book readings or music and movement activities. You can also talk about your worries as a parent. KIF says Japanese parents are welcome too, and that it is fine if you do not speak Japanese.
It meets on the 4th Thursday of each month, 10:00–11:30, at the International Center, for ¥100. There is room for up to 10 families, and booking opens on the 1st of each month. Book with the online form linked from the flyer, or contact KIF (096-359-2121, nihongo@kumamoto-if.or.jp). More details are on the Hotto Salon page.
4. Japanese Culture Experience Day (October 25, 2026)
Kumamoto International Foundation
KIF’s Japanese Culture Experience Day for Foreigners (外国人のための日本文化体験DAY) lets you be dressed in a kimono, try a tea ceremony, and then walk around Kumamoto Castle in the kimono for about an hour. It is on Sunday, October 25, 2026, on the 5th floor of the International Center, and costs ¥1,000. Entry to Kumamoto Castle is not included; you pay its admission fee separately.
The English flyer says it is for foreigners and has room for 80 people, in seven time slots of about 11 people each, from 9:30 to 14:00. Places are given on a first-come, first-served basis, and online booking opened on September 25. On October 4, KIF said the 13:30–14:00 slot was full. Book with the online form on KIF’s event page, and arrive 5 minutes before your time.
5. Share your country as a guest speaker
Kumamoto International Foundation
The Community Internationalization Volunteer (地域国際化推進ボランティア) role is written for foreign residents living in Kumamoto. KIF sends volunteers to local schools, community centers and other groups to introduce their home country, for about one to two hours. You might talk about daily life, customs and culture, show a home-style dish, introduce traditional dance, instruments or music, or teach games. KIF does not give an English name for the role, so this is a plain translation.
The visits start when a school or group asks KIF for a speaker. KIF’s page for those groups (updated November 2025) asks them to apply at least a month before the date.
- Read KIF’s volunteer page (in Japanese, last updated April 2023). It lists the kinds of topics speakers share.
- Contact the International Center and say you are interested. Call 096-359-2121 or write to koza@kumamoto-if.or.jp.
- Ask how to register. KIF’s general volunteer page says you register from each role’s page, but this role’s page asks you to contact the center, and the role is not on KIF’s online registration list.
KIF does not say which language the talks are given in, or whether speakers are paid or have any costs. Ask when you contact them.
6. Other ways to help
Kumamoto International Foundation
6.1 Student volunteers
KIF’s student volunteers (学生ボランティア) help at its events: reception at the International Cafe, children’s English classes, reception and interpreting at the Culture Experience Day, and the year-end party. The party is held on the evening of the 2nd Saturday in December, and student volunteers plan it from September. Students at high school, university or vocational school who live in Kumamoto City or go to school there can register.
Registration for fiscal 2026 opened on April 1. First-time volunteers must attend an orientation before they start. KIF holds information sessions on the 3rd Saturday of each month, 16:00–17:00, at the International Center; book by email to koza@kumamoto-if.or.jp.
6.2 Language volunteers
If you are good at a language, you can register as a language volunteer (語学ボランティア). KIF asks registered volunteers to help when it receives a request, for example translating a private letter from abroad or interpreting at a non-profit exchange event or a KIF event. KIF does not ask for commercial translation. Information volunteers (情報ボランティア) translate articles from the city newsletter into English, Chinese or Korean, and need to be able to use a computer. Read KIF’s guidelines (PDF, in Japanese) and register with the online form.
7. Where is the International Center?
