When each of the 24 oyster huts at five Itoshima ports opens for the 2026–27 season, how a visit works, prices, booking and payment rules, and how to get there by train and bus from Fukuoka City.

You live in Fukuoka or Kumamoto and want to try grilled oysters at a kaki-goya (牡蠣小屋, oyster hut) in Itoshima this winter. This guide lists when each hut opens for the 2026–27 season, how a visit works, and how to get there without driving. Every fact comes from the Itoshima City Tourism Association or the hut’s own website. When a hut does not say something, we write “Not stated”.

In short

  • The first hut to open is Noburin at Kishi port, on Thursday, October 1, 2026. Most others open between October 3 and November 1.
  • 24 huts at five fishing ports serve grilled oysters. The season runs until about April.
  • Rules on bringing food, booking and payment are different at each hut. Check the hut’s own website before you go.
  • If you will drink, do not drive. Take the train and a bus. The roads near the ports are often jammed.

Checked with official pages on September 28, 2026.

Opening dates for 2026–27, earliest first. Hours are from the tourism association’s list. Tap a hut to see its phone number and website.

The tourism association’s list gives “mid-October” for Nisshinmaru. The hut’s own notice of September 25, 2026 says it opens on October 24, so we show that date. Some huts give different hours on their own websites; those are noted in section 6.

The tourism association also posted its list of opening dates on its official X account on September 27, 2026:

1. What is an oyster hut, and how does a visit work?

Depends on the hut

An oyster hut (the tourism association calls it a grilled-oyster shop, 焼きカキ店舗) is a seasonal restaurant at a fishing port. You buy oysters and other seafood, and you grill them yourself on a charcoal or gas grill at your table. Each hut sets its own rules, so read the hut’s website or call before you go.

  • Clothes. Nakamiyamaru asks you to wear clothes that can get dirty, because you cook over charcoal. Fujimaru lends jackets, work gloves and oyster knives for free. Kaki House Shoei lends jackets and aprons, and Hirochan Kaki lends gloves and jackets.
  • Grill fee. Some huts charge for the fire: ¥550 per table for charcoal at Fujimaru and Nakamiyamaru (tax included at Nakamiyamaru).
  • Bringing food and drinks. Fujimaru, Nakamiyamaru and Noburin let you bring food and drinks, but you may not grill them on the hut’s grill. Kaki House Shoei allows only drinks and seasonings. From the 2026 season, Kenchan Kaki asks you not to bring rice balls or other rice. Nakamiyamaru asks you to take your trash home.
  • Help with opening oysters. Fujimaru says it shows first-time visitors how to open the shells. Kenchan Kaki explains the steps on its website.

Important

Nakamiyamaru and Kenchan Kaki ask you to cook oysters all the way through. Kenchan Kaki warns that juice and bits of shell can fly out while they cook, and that the grill and the area around it get hot.

2. How much does it cost?

Depends on the hut

Oysters are sold by the kilogram or by the plate, and you pay for other seafood and side dishes separately. These are the prices on the huts’ websites when we checked. Prices can change for the new season, so check the menu on the day.

  • Nakamiyamaru (Kishi): oysters ¥1,200 per kg, tax included.
  • Tokueimaru (Kishi): oysters ¥1,200 per kg. Set menus for 2 to 3 people are ¥4,500 to ¥5,400, and ¥8,500 for 4 to 5 people.
  • Kaki House Mokkun (Funakoshi): one plate of oysters ¥1,200.
  • Hirochan Kaki (Kafuri): one plate of medium oysters (about 12) ¥1,320 with tax.
  • Kaisen Nikomaru (Fukae): oysters ¥1,500 per kg.

The other huts do not list prices on their websites, or their menus are from an earlier season.

3. Can I book, and can I pay by card?

Depends on the hut

Some huts take no bookings on weekends and holidays, and one hut asks everyone to book. What the huts say on their websites:

  • Booking needed: Nisshinmaru asks you to book by phone before you come (notice of September 25, 2026).
  • Booking possible: Noburin (booking form on its website), Nakamiyamaru (by phone on weekdays, 9:00 to 17:00), Toyohisamaru (weekends and holidays by phone), Kaki House Shoei (on the day, until 11:00), Kenchan Kaki (booking and contact page on its website) and Hirochan Kaki (by phone).
  • No bookings on weekends and holidays: Hattoriya says it does not take bookings and asks weekend and holiday guests to keep their meal to about 1 hour 30 minutes, because people wait in line. Maruhachi Hikitsumaru takes bookings by phone, but not for weekends and holidays.

Payment: Kaisen Nikomaru says it takes cash, smartphone payment and credit cards. The other huts do not state which payment methods they accept at the hut. Bring cash in case cards are not accepted, or ask the hut before you go.

4. Is there help in English?

Depends on the hut

No hut says on its website that its staff speak English. Some websites have English pages:

  • Tokueimaru: a menu page in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean.
  • Kaki House Mokkun: an English version of its website.
  • Noburin: a language switch with English, Chinese and Korean on its website.
  • Hirochan Kaki: an “English” link that opens a Google Translate version of the website.

5. How do I get there from Fukuoka City?

Itoshima City Tourism Association

All huts are in Itoshima City. Fukae and Fukuyoshi ports are a walk from a station. Kishi, Funakoshi, Kafuri and Nogita need a bus from Chikuzen-Maebaru Station (筑前前原駅).

  1. Take a train bound for Chikuzen-Maebaru. On the Fukuoka City Subway Airport Line, some trains from Hakata and Tenjin run through to Chikuzen-Maebaru on the JR Chikuhi Line; the subway timetable shows them as bound for 筑前前原. Check the timetable for the time you want.
  2. For Kishi, Funakoshi, Kafuri or Nogita, change to a bus at Chikuzen-Maebaru. Buses leave from the north exit. The tourism association says there are not many buses, so check the times first.
  3. For Fukae or Fukuyoshi, stay on the JR Chikuhi Line to Chikuzen-Fukae Station (about 17 minutes’ walk to the port) or Fukuyoshi Station (about 12 minutes’ walk).

Bus lines, taxi times and driving times for each port are in section 6. If you come from Kumamoto, travel to Hakata first and then follow the steps above.

Important

Drinking and driving is strictly forbidden. The tourism association asks anyone who will drink to use public transport. Every port has a parking lot, but the association says the roads near the huts are jammed every year.

The tourism association also says a hut may close for the day when its live oysters sell out, and may stop serving during opening hours in bad weather. If you travel far, check the hut’s website or social media on the day.

6. Huts at each port

Itoshima City Tourism Association

The tourism association says the Itoshima huts are open from about October to about April. Each hut closes on its own date. The end dates for 2026–27 are not out yet. Last season, the association posted a list of planned closing dates in March and said the dates could move. If you plan a trip in spring, check that list first.

Common questions

Can I bring lunch for my children?

At Nakamiyamaru, you may bring a boxed lunch and drinks if you do not grill them on the hut’s grill. Noburin also welcomes rice balls and boxed lunches, but not meat or fish to grill. Kenchan Kaki asks you not to bring rice balls or rice from the 2026 season.

Can I buy oysters to take home?

Yes. Yoshimura (Kishi), Fukumaru (Fukae) and Hoyumaru (Nogita) sell oysters to take home only. Nisshinmaru says it starts selling oysters to take home and by delivery on October 24, the same day its hut opens.

Can I come with a dog?

Nisshinmaru says it accepts guests with pets on days with good weather, and sometimes indoors if there is space. Other huts do not state a pet rule.

What is “Itoshima Kaki”?

“Itoshima Kaki” (糸島カキ) is the name of the oysters from Itoshima. The tourism association says the name was registered as a regional collective trademark in 2019.
