Fukuoka Airport is close to the city. Which way is fastest depends on whether you land at the domestic or international terminal: subway, free shuttle bus, direct bus or taxi.

Fukuoka Airport says it is located near the city center. Which way is fastest depends on one thing first: did you land at the domestic terminal or the international terminal?

In short

  • From the domestic terminal, the subway goes straight into the city: about 5 minutes to Hakata Station and about 11 minutes to Tenjin.
  • The international terminal is not connected to the subway. Take the free shuttle bus to the domestic terminal first.
  • Airport buses go direct from both terminals to Hakata, Tenjin and other stops, with no transfer.
  • Taxi stands are on the 1st floor of both terminals.

From Fukuoka Airport to Hakata and Tenjin: subway, bus and taxi compared

1. Landed at the domestic terminal? Take the subway.

Fukuoka City

Fukuoka Airport’s domestic terminal building is directly connected to Fukuoka City Subway’s Fukuoka Airport Station, on the Kuko (Airport) Line. Fukuoka City Subway’s timetable lists the ride as 5 minutes to Hakata and 11 minutes to Tenjin, with no transfer.

Fares are set by distance. According to the subway’s fare search, a single ride from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata or to Tenjin costs ¥260 for adults and ¥130 for children (elementary school age). Fukuoka City Subway says trains run from 5:30 to 0:25, every 4 to 8 minutes.

2. Landed at the international terminal? Take the free shuttle bus first.

Fukuoka Airport

Fukuoka Airport says the subway is not directly connected to the international terminal. To reach the subway, take the free inter-terminal shuttle bus to the domestic terminal, then walk in to the subway station. The airport’s access map shows the shuttle ride as about 10 minutes.

  • Cost: free, and all shuttle buses have wheelchair ramps.
  • Frequency: Fukuoka Airport’s timetable shows buses about every 5–7 minutes for most of the day, then about every 10–15 minutes after 21:00. The first bus leaves at about 6:00 and the last at about 23:20. The airport says departure times are estimates.
  • Boarding: at the Domestic Passenger Terminal Building (South Shuttle Bus Stop) and at the International Passenger Terminal Building. You can board and get off through either door.

Important

Fukuoka Airport says the shuttle bus gets extremely crowded between 8:30 and 9:30 in the morning. If your connection is tight in that window, leave extra time or consider a direct airport bus instead (see the bus section below).

3. Buses to Hakata, Tenjin and beyond, with no transfer

Depends on the provider

Airport buses leave from both the domestic and international terminals and run directly into the city — useful if you have heavy luggage or land at the international terminal and would rather skip the shuttle-then-subway route. Fukuoka Airport’s bus page lists local buses from the domestic terminal to Hakata Station (Nishi-Nippon Railroad), Hakata Station and Tenjin (HEARTS), Fukuoka Tower and AEON Mall Fukuoka, and from the international terminal to Hakata Station, Tenjin, Dazaifu and LaLaport Fukuoka. For current times and fares, the airport links to each bus company’s own timetable.

From the international terminal, Nishitetsu runs the Airport Express (特急 天神~福岡空港線), which makes no stops between the international terminal and Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal (西鉄天神高速バスターミナル). Nishitetsu lists the adult fare as ¥500, or ¥480 with a transport IC card; credit cards are not accepted. Nishitetsu’s announcement of March 16, 2026 gave the ride time as about 30 to 40 minutes. At the airport it leaves from stop 8.

Highway buses to other parts of Kyushu can be booked through the By@Bus reservation site or the Kyushu Highway Bus Reservation Center, 092-734-2727 (8:00–19:00, in Japanese, Korean, Chinese and English).

4. Taxi

Fukuoka Airport

Taxi stands are on the 1st floor of both terminals. There are seven stands at the domestic terminal (including regular, premium, large, reserved and accessible pick-up points) and three at the international terminal. Fukuoka Airport does not publish a fixed fare table; ask the driver or use a route-planning app for an estimate. For questions about taxi service, Fukuoka Airport lists the Fukuoka City Taxi Association, 092-434-5100 (weekdays 9:00–17:00, Japanese only).

Once you are in the city, Getting around Fukuoka City covers the subway, Nishitetsu buses and trains, and IC cards for the rest of your stay.
