Yamaguchi has a handful of factories and breweries that open their doors to visitors by reservation. This guide compares five in Iwakuni, Shunan, Ube and Shimonoseki: Sakai Shuzo, Hatsumomidi, the Umamon pickle workshop, Ube Kamaboko and Yamaguchi Kenraku Milk Industry. It shows who can join as a small group, what it costs, where to park and how to book. All five official pages are written in Japanese, and none says that staff speak English.
In short
- Small groups can book Sakai Shuzo (free, up to 20 people, June to mid-September only), Hatsumomidi (¥2,000, with a three-sake tasting set) and the Umamon pickle workshop (¥2,500 per person for 4 or more).
- Ube Kamaboko is free and takes up to 80 people. Yamaguchi Kenraku Milk Industry takes groups of 10 to 100 on weekdays only.
- Every tour needs a reservation. Ube Kamaboko accepts phone or FAX only, not email.
- Sakai Shuzo is closed to new bookings until June 2027, and Hatsumomidi does not allow drivers to drink.

1. How do the five tours compare?
Depends on the provider
Only three of the five tours suit a family or a small group; the other two are set up for school and company groups. Prices are for one visitor, as written on each official page.
| Place (city) | Cost and group size | Parking | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sakai Shuzo (Iwakuni) | Free, up to 20 people | 2 – 3 cars | 7+ days ahead |
| Hatsumomidi (Shunan) | ¥2,000 | Yes | 3 days ahead |
| Umamon (Iwakuni) | ¥2,500, 4 or more | Not stated | Web or phone |
| Ube Kamaboko (Ube) | Free, up to 80 people | Yes | Phone or FAX |
| Yamaguchi Kenraku (Shimonoseki) | 10 – 100 people (groups) | Not stated | Web form |
“Not stated” means the official page gives no figure or fee. Ask the organizer before you go.
2. What should I check before choosing?
Depends on the provider
Opening days and group size decide which tour you can actually join.
- Days. Hatsumomidi runs Wednesday to Saturday, 13:00 – 17:00. Yamaguchi Kenraku takes weekday visits only. Ube Kamaboko is closed on Wednesdays and Sundays. Sakai Shuzo accepts tours from June to mid-September only.
- Group size. Sakai Shuzo cannot take more than 20 people. Umamon’s paid tour starts at 4 people. Yamaguchi Kenraku starts at 10.
- Car. Ube Kamaboko is about 5 minutes by car from the Ube Interchange on the Sanyo Expressway, and Yamaguchi Kenraku about 5 minutes from the Kogetsu Interchange on the Chugoku Expressway. Sakai Shuzo has room for only 2 or 3 cars.
- Language. The pages are in Japanese, and none says whether staff speak English. See the booking steps in section 8.
3. Sakai Shuzo (酒井酒造) in Iwakuni: is it open now?
Depends on the provider
Sakai Shuzo’s free brewery tour runs only from June to mid-September, and this season’s bookings have closed. The brewery says it is too busy from mid-September to May to host visitors, and its page says the next booking season is next year. Check the page again from around June 2027.

Tours start between 10:00 and 12:00 or between 13:00 and 16:00 and last about one hour, including tasting and sales. The brewery cannot take groups of more than 20. Apply at least 7 days before your date; it does not answer last-minute requests. If you arrive 15 minutes or more late, the booking is cancelled. Tours may be shared with another group. Replies are sent to a PC email address, so a phone-only address may need its settings changed to receive them. The page does not say whether drivers may taste.

4. Hatsumomidi (はつもみぢ) in Shunan: what does ¥2,000 include?
Depends on the provider
Hatsumomidi’s sake brewery tour costs ¥2,000 and includes a set of three sakes to taste. It is a brewery in the middle of Shunan City, and staff explain how its junmai sake “Harada” and its seasonal sake “Te, Saku” are made while you look at the equipment.
Tours run Wednesday to Saturday at 13:00 – 17:00 and take 40 to 60 minutes. Book at least 3 days ahead through the brewery’s official LINE account (reservation menu) or by phone. Parking is available. Arrive 5 minutes early.
Important
Hatsumomidi does not allow people who are driving to drink. It also turns away visitors wearing strong perfume or hair products, and anyone who ate natto (fermented soybeans) or a lactic-acid product that day.

5. Umamon pickle workshop (うまもん漬物工房) in Iwakuni: how do I join?
Depends on the provider
The Umamon workshop’s paid tour costs ¥2,500 per person, for groups of 4 or more, and includes a sweet-sake (amazake) smoothie. The workshop is in an old merchant house with an earthen storehouse, near Kintai Bridge. The company says seven wells on the site supply groundwater that washes its vegetables.
You can book on the website or by phone. A separate tour page says “free, from 1 person” and a tasting, which differs from the paid tour. Phone before you book to confirm which tour applies to you. The company also runs a nuka-bed (rice-bran pickling) experience; see its site for details. Parking is not stated.
Address: 1-14-11 Iwakuni, Iwakuni City (岩国市岩国1丁目14-11). Google Maps. Phone: 0827-41-2115. Official page.
6. Ube Kamaboko (宇部かまぼこ) in Ube: can I just turn up?
Depends on the provider
You cannot just turn up: Ube Kamaboko needs a reservation by phone or FAX, and it does not accept email. The factory (Kitakyushu Nissui Ube Factory) has a wide walkway for visitors to watch fish-cake making. The line may be stopped, depending on the factory’s operations.
Visits are 10:00 – 15:00. The company’s page lists Wednesday and Sunday as closed, plus irregular days. The Yamaguchi prefectural tourism site adds holidays, says admission is free, the visit takes about 60 minutes, up to 80 people can join, and parking is available. A guide and tasting need a reservation and start from 20 people. For general and school visits call the business department (業務部) on 0836-33-5152; for bus tours the factory shop on 0836-33-1161.

7. Yamaguchi Kenraku Milk Industry (やまぐち県酪乳業) in Shimonoseki: who can visit?
Depends on the provider
Yamaguchi Kenraku’s dairy plant tour is for groups of 10 to 100 people and runs on weekdays only. Tours are at 9:00 – 12:00 and 13:00 – 15:00 and take about one hour: a company talk, a video, a look at the production line and questions. There is no elevator, so visitors climb stairs.
Book through the contact form on the company site by ticking the factory tour (工場見学) box. By car it is about 5 minutes from the Kogetsu Interchange; by bus it is about 15 minutes from JR Kogetsu Station (get off at Yumedanchi-mae). The page states no fee and no parking information.
Address: 1 Yumedanchi, Tabe, Kikugawacho, Shimonoseki City (下関市菊川町田部夢団地1番). Google Maps. Official page.
8. How do I book in Japanese?
Depends on the provider
- Pick a date that fits the days above. Count the number of people, because each tour has a minimum or maximum.
- Use the booking method on the official page. Yamaguchi Kenraku uses a web form, Hatsumomidi uses LINE or phone, Umamon the web or phone, and Ube Kamaboko phone or FAX. Sakai Shuzo’s page does not show how to apply while bookings are closed.
- Give your date, group size and a contact address. At Yamaguchi Kenraku, tick “工場見学” (factory tour) on the form.
- Arrive early. Sakai Shuzo cancels bookings after a 15-minute delay, and Hatsumomidi asks you to come 5 minutes early.
