If you or someone in your family turns 20 in the 2026 school year, the ward you live in may invite you to a Coming-of-Age ceremony (二十歳のつどい, hatachi no tsudoi) in January 2027. Each Tokyo ward runs its own ceremony, with its own time, venue and sign-up. This guide compares five wards: Setagaya, Nerima, Ota, Edogawa and Adachi. Four of them have announced their 2027 plans. Adachi has not yet announced the details for participants.
In short
- Setagaya, Nerima, Ota and Edogawa will all hold their ceremony on Monday, January 11, 2027 (a national holiday). Adachi has not announced the ceremony time for participants. Its organizing committee’s schedule (a plan, as of March 4, 2026) lists the ceremony on Monday, January 11, 2027 at the Tokyo Budokan.
- The ceremony is for people born between April 2, 2006 and April 1, 2007.
- Edogawa requires advance sign-up through LINE by 23:59 on Monday, December 21, 2026. Nerima also asks you to sign up in advance, using the invitation it will mail.
- Ota says you cannot come by car, and Edogawa asks you not to. Use trains or buses.
- People who have moved out of the ward may still attend in all four wards, but the steps differ.
Checked with official ward pages on October 5, 2026.
1. Which ward holds the ceremony when, and where?
Each ward decides its own ceremony
Four wards have published a January 11, 2027 ceremony. Their start times, venues and sign-up rules are different. Tap a ward name to jump to its section. Times are in 24-hour format.
| Ward | Start time | Venue | Advance sign-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setagaya | 10:00, 12:30 or 15:00 | Setagaya Egret Hall | Not stated |
| Nerima | 10:30, 12:45 or 15:00 | Nerima Culture Center | Yes, from the invitation |
| Ota | 11:00 | EBARA WAVE Arena Ota | Not stated |
| Edogawa | 11:00 or 13:00 | Tower Hall Funabori or a ward junior high school | Yes, by LINE |
| Adachi | Not announced (planned for Jan 11) | Tokyo Budokan (planned) | Not announced |
“Not stated” means the official page we checked does not mention it. Adachi’s date and venue come from its organizing committee’s schedule, not from an announcement for participants.
2. How do these ceremonies work?
Ward-run ceremonies
The ceremony is a ward event for people who turn 20 in the fiscal year (April to March). In these wards the eligible people are those born from April 2, 2006 to April 1, 2007. The wards mail an invitation (案内状, annaijo) to the address on record. Several wards split the group into two or three sessions, usually by the junior high school you attended or the area you live in. So your time depends on your address, not on a choice you make.
The pages we checked speak of residents or people living in the ward. They do not say whether foreign residents may attend, or whether any English help is available. Ask the ward office, using the phone number in each section, before you go.
3. Setagaya Ward: three sessions, and an invitation is not required
Setagaya Ward (世田谷区)
Setagaya holds its ceremony on Monday, January 11, 2027, in three one-hour sessions at Setagaya Egret Hall (せたがやイーグレットホール, Setagaya Ward Hall). The sessions run 10:00–11:00, 12:30–13:30 and 15:00–16:00. About 8,400 people are eligible, according to the ward (as of April 1, 2026).
The ward assigns a session by home address, using junior high school districts as a guide. It publishes a lookup table by address as a PDF on its page. You may attend a different session from the one assigned, and staff do not check which session you came for. Seats in the hall are first come, first served. The ceremony is also relayed live on monitors at the Setagaya Ward Office.
If you lose your invitation, you can still attend. Staff do not check invitations at the venue. If you have moved out of Setagaya, you can attend too. The ward does not mail an invitation to people who no longer live there, so check your session using your old address and go straight to the hall. The ward gives no souvenir gift. It sends a commemorative booklet with the invitation.
If you live in Setagaya now but want to attend the ceremony of your old hometown, you need no procedure with Setagaya. Contact that town or city directly.
Address: 4-21-27 Setagaya, Setagaya Ward. From Setagaya Station or Shoinjinja-mae Station on the Tokyu Setagaya Line, it is a 5-minute walk. Phone: 03-6304-3593 (Setagaya Ward, in Japanese). Google Maps
4. Nerima Ward: three sessions by junior high school area
Nerima Ward (練馬区)
Nerima holds its ceremony on Monday, January 11, 2027, at Nerima Culture Center (練馬文化センター), in three sessions by junior high school district. One venue is used for all of them.
- Session 1, 10:30–11:20 (doors open 10:00): the Nerima and Toyotama areas. The junior high schools listed are Asahigaoka, Toyotama, Toyotama Daini, Nakamura, Kaishin 1–4, Kitamachi, Nerima, Nerima Higashi, Nukui and Tagara.
- Session 2, 12:45–13:35 (doors open 12:15): the Hikarigaoka and Oizumi areas. The schools are Hokei, Hikarigaoka 1–3, Yahara, Oizumi, Oizumi Nishi, Oizumi Kita, Oizumi Gakuen, Oizumi Gakuen Sakura and Yasaka.
- Session 3, 15:00–15:50 (doors open 14:30): the Shakujii area. The schools are Shakujii, Shakujii Higashi, Shakujii Nishi, Shakujii Minami, Kami-Shakujii, Minamigaoka, Miharadai, Oizumi Daini and Seki.
The ward plans to mail invitations in mid-November. You then sign up in advance using that invitation, and you can also change your session time. The ward says it will post how to change your time on its page once decided. If you went to a national, metropolitan or private junior high school and now live in the ward, use the school-district list (a PDF on the ward page) to find your session.
If you have moved your resident registration out of Nerima, no invitation is mailed. You must apply separately, and the ward says it will post how to do that once decided. The ceremony has a first part of about 20 minutes (the national anthem, the ward mayor’s speech, messages from 20-year-olds) and a second part of about 30 minutes with an event planned by volunteer staff and a prize draw.
Address: Nerima Culture Center, 1-17-37 Nerima, Nerima Ward. From Nerima Station (Seibu Ikebukuro Line, Seibu Yurakucho Line and Toei Oedo Line) it is a 1-minute walk. Phone: 03-5984-1292 (Nerima Ward Youth Division, in Japanese). Google Maps
5. Ota Ward: one session at 11:00, no cars
Ota Ward (大田区)
Ota’s ceremony is on Monday, January 11, 2027. Doors open at 10:00, the ceremony starts at 11:00 and it ends around noon. You cannot come by car or be dropped off. The venue is EBARA WAVE Arena Ota (EBARA WAVEアリーナおおた, the Ota City General Gymnasium).
The program has a celebration ceremony of about 15 minutes, then a stage attraction of 45–60 minutes. Afterward the venue stays open for chatting: the main arena until 13:00 and the sub arena until 14:00. Eligible people are residents born April 2, 2006 to April 1, 2007. The ward plans to send invitations in early December 2026.
The roads around the venue are very crowded and traffic is controlled. The ward plans a free shuttle bus between JR Kamata Station and the venue. The details are still being arranged, and the ward will post the boarding places and times on its page. There is no waiting area for parents, and in general only the people being celebrated and invited guests may enter the building. Staff may refuse entry to people who are drunk. Alcohol is not allowed inside.
If you live outside Ota now, for example because you moved for school or work, you can still attend. Ask for an invitation through the application form on the ward page. People registered in Ota do not need to apply.

6. Edogawa Ward: two sessions, and you must sign up by LINE
Edogawa Ward (江戸川区)
Important
Edogawa requires advance sign-up through the ward’s LINE official account, until 23:59 on Monday, December 21, 2026. The ward says that without a sign-up you may not be able to enter, and that you must sign up on your own smartphone. Signing up on someone else’s phone can lead to refused entry, because staff match your sign-up on the day.
Edogawa Ward’s ceremony (二十歳を祝う会, hatachi o iwau kai) begins at 11:00 for the morning session and at 13:00 for the afternoon session on Monday, January 11, 2027. About 7,000 people turn 20 in the ward. The venues are Tower Hall Funabori (タワーホール船堀) and all 32 ward junior high schools. The ward says each junior high school shows a live broadcast of the ceremony from Tower Hall.
The ward page (updated September 17, 2026) says the Tower Hall main hall has reached its sign-up limit for both sessions, so at this point you need to choose a junior high school venue. The invitation names a nearby junior high school by home address, and you can change to another venue by following the instructions in the notice. A venue change also needs the advance sign-up. The sign-up has separate pages for people living in the ward and for people living outside it.
The ward asks you not to come or be dropped off by car near Tower Hall. The junior high school venues have no parking or bicycle parking and no waiting area, so do not arrive before the doors open. They also have a limited number of toilets. Tower Hall has sign language interpreters and private rooms for people who find it hard to sit in the hall, such as those with small children or a disability. Ask the ward for details. If you need support, such as a wheelchair, contact the Youth Section in advance.
Address: Tower Hall Funabori, 4-1-1 Funabori, Edogawa Ward. From Funabori Station on the Toei Shinjuku Line it is a 1-minute walk. Phone: 03-5662-1629 (Edogawa Ward Youth Section, in Japanese). Google Maps
7. Adachi Ward: no ceremony time for participants yet
Adachi Ward (足立区)
Adachi has not yet told participants the start time of its 2027 ceremony, or how to attend. The ward’s ceremony page, last updated February 6, 2026, only reports the previous ceremony, held on January 12, 2026 at the Tokyo Budokan. We checked it on October 5, 2026. Report on the January 2026 ceremony (Adachi Ward, in Japanese)
For 2027, the ward has a page recruiting the ceremony’s organizing committee. It says the committee’s work runs from May 28, 2026 to January 11, 2027, including the day before and the day of the ceremony. The committee’s schedule on that page (PDF, a plan as of March 4, 2026) lists a rehearsal at the Tokyo Budokan on Sunday, January 10, and the ceremony at the Tokyo Budokan on Monday, January 11, 2027. This is the committee’s work schedule. It does not say what time participants should arrive. 2027 organizing committee page (Adachi Ward, in Japanese) / committee schedule (PDF, in Japanese)
If you are registered in Adachi, check the official time and venue on your invitation and on the ward’s page.
Phone: 03-3880-5264 (Adachi Ward Youth Division, in Japanese).
The ward has posted a video of last year’s ceremony on its official YouTube channel.
8. What if I live outside the ward now?
Rules differ by ward
If you moved for school or work, each ward handles it differently. Here is what the ward pages say.
For Edogawa, the non-resident sign-up is for people who did not have a resident registration in the ward on April 24, 2026. The Youth Section also answers questions about moving out (03-5662-1629). Adachi has not said.
