How to get rid of a bed, bicycle or sofa in Tokyo: book with your ward, buy its fee stickers, and compare drop-off rules in five wards. Setagaya and Adachi accept phone bookings in English.

If you are moving out, or you just need to get rid of a bed, a bicycle or a sofa in Tokyo, you cannot put it out with normal garbage. Large items are “oversized garbage” (粗大ごみ, sodai gomi), and each ward has its own booking center, fee stickers and drop-off rules. This guide compares five wards: Setagaya, Nerima, Ota, Edogawa and Adachi.

In short

  • Book first, by phone or online, for both pickup and drop-off. Items put out without booking are not collected (section 1).
  • Pay with the ward’s own fee stickers (A ¥200, B ¥300) from convenience stores, or online in some wards. Another ward’s stickers cannot be used (section 2).
  • Setagaya and Adachi say you can book by phone in English. The online booking sites of Setagaya, Ota, Edogawa and Adachi have an English option (section 1).
  • Taking items yourself is cheaper: free in Adachi, about half price in Setagaya, lower in Edogawa (section 4).
  • Air conditioners, TVs, fridges, freezers, washing machines, clothes dryers and home PCs are not oversized garbage.

How do the five wards compare?

Depends on your ward

Every ward needs a booking before you put an item out or take it to the drop-off site. Online booking works 24 hours, except during maintenance.

Ward Phone booking Drop-off
Setagaya Mon–Sat 8:00–19:00 Sat or Sun, about half price
Nerima Automated line Any day incl. holidays, 3 times a year
Ota Daily 8:00–19:00 Phone booking only, 4 times a year
Edogawa Mon–Sat 8:00–19:00 Every day, 3 times a year
Adachi Mon–Sat 8:00–19:00 Free, up to 20 items a year

1. How do I book?

Depends on your ward

  1. Measure the item first. Setagaya and Ota ask for the longest side and the next longest side of box-shaped items.
  2. Book by phone, online or chat. Choose pickup (収集, shushu) or drop-off (持ち込み, mochikomi). The center tells you the date and the fee.
  3. Write down the booking number (受付番号, uketsuke bango). You write it, or your name, on the sticker.

Setagaya says it accepts phone bookings in English, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish through a three-way call with an interpreter, and its online booking is also in English. Adachi says its phone center accepts English, Chinese and Korean. The online booking sites of Ota, Edogawa and Adachi show an English option in their language menu. Nerima’s and Ota’s pages do not say whether the phone line can be used in English.

Tip

Book early if you are moving. Ota says March and April are very busy, Adachi says pickup is usually about one week after you apply, and Ota says pickup can be two weeks or more away. Several wards say Monday mornings are hard to get through by phone.

2. How do I pay?

Depends on your ward

All five wards use A stickers (¥200) and B stickers (¥300). Combine them to make the fee, write the date and your name or booking number on them, and stick them on each item. Buy your own ward’s stickers: the wards say stickers from another ward or city cannot be used. You buy them at convenience stores, supermarkets and other shops with the sign for fee stickers (有料ごみ処理券取扱所), after you book.

Setagaya (online, chat, or a call from a mobile phone) and Nerima (online pickup bookings) also accept online payment by credit card or PayPay. Then you do not need stickers. Write the date and your booking number on a sheet of paper at least 10 cm by 10 cm and tape it to each item.

Stickers you have already used are not refunded. Setagaya says it refunds unused stickers if you move out of Setagaya.

3. How much is a futon, a bicycle or a bed?

Depends on your ward

These are pickup fees from the wards’ fee lists. Setagaya and Nerima tell you the fee when you book.

Item Ota Edogawa Adachi
Futon ¥300 ¥400 ¥400
Bicycle* ¥900 ¥900 ¥400
Single bed** ¥1,300 ¥1,300 ¥1,200

* Ota: 16-inch wheels or larger. Edogawa and Adachi: not electric-assist. ** Frame only; the mattress is a separate item. Adachi also takes unwanted household bicycles for free at its bicycle storage sites.

5. How do I put it out for pickup?

Depends on your ward

Put the item out by 8:00 on the pickup day, with the stickers or paper on it, at the place agreed when you booked. Do not put it at the normal garbage collection point. In apartment buildings, it usually goes to the building’s oversized garbage area or near the ground-floor entrance; Ota says you cannot leave it outside your own apartment door. Nerima and Adachi say you do not need to be home.

Important

Nerima City and the Ministry of the Environment warn about collectors who hand out flyers offering to take unwanted items, then charge high fees. Use your ward’s booking center.

Common questions

Can I put out an air conditioner, fridge or washing machine?

No. All five wards say air conditioners, TVs, fridges, freezers, washing machines and clothes dryers are covered by the Home Appliance Recycling Act and are not oversized garbage. Home PCs are also excluded.

Can I put out items from my shop or office?

No. The wards do not take oversized garbage from business activities.

Is there a lower fee for families on low income?

Yes. Each ward reduces or waives the pickup fee for some people, such as those on public assistance. Ask when you book. Nerima and Adachi say you must apply for this by phone, not online.

Do I have to be at home on the pickup day?

No. Nerima and Adachi say you do not need to be there.
