This page is general information from official sources. It is not medical advice. If you think your child’s life is in danger, call 119 now.
If your child gets a fever at night or on a Sunday in Tokyo and your usual clinic is closed, there are three kinds of help: phone advice lines, a service that tells you which clinics are open now, and children’s night clinics run by each ward. This guide explains the phone numbers, what to say, and the night clinics in six wards.
In short
- Life in danger (not conscious, cannot breathe): call 119. Tokyo Fire Department says English-speaking staff are always on duty for 119 calls (section 1).
- Not sure whether to call an ambulance: #7119, 24 hours (section 2).
- Questions about a child’s symptoms at night: #8000, from 18:00 on weekdays and all day on weekends and holidays (section 2).
- To find a clinic in English: Tokyo’s foreign-language line 03-5285-8181, every day 9:00–20:00 (section 3).
- Ward night clinics differ in hours and booking. Call or check the ward page before you go (section 4).

Which number should I call?
Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Fire Department
Use #8000 for advice about a child’s symptoms, #7119 if you are not sure about an ambulance, and Himawari to find a clinic that is open now. These are phone lines. They do not diagnose your child.

1. When should I call 119?
Tokyo Fire Department
Call 119 for an ambulance if you think your child’s life is in danger. Tokyo Fire Department says its 119 centers always have staff in charge of English. For Chinese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, it connects a phone interpreter in a three-way call.
2. How do #7119 and #8000 work?
2.1 #7119: not sure about an ambulance
Tokyo Fire Department
The Tokyo Fire Department Emergency Consultation Center (東京消防庁救急相談センター) answers #7119 24 hours a day, every day. A medical team of doctors, nurses and former ambulance staff helps you decide whether to go to a hospital or call an ambulance. If #7119 does not connect from your phone, call 03-3212-2323 in the 23 wards, or 042-521-2323 in the Tama area.
- Listen to the recorded message. The call starts with an automated voice.
- Press 2 for emergency advice (救急相談, kyukyu sodan). Press 1 to be told which hospitals are open. If you press nothing, you are connected to 1.
The fire department’s page does not say whether #7119 can be used in English. It also offers an online self-check, the Tokyo Emergency Medical Guide (東京版救急受診ガイド), that shows how urgent symptoms are.
2.2 #8000: advice about your child
Tokyo Metropolitan Government
Tokyo’s Child Health Consultation (子供の健康相談室, #8000) is answered by nurses and public health nurses, and a pediatrician helps when needed. On weekdays it opens at 18:00 and runs until 8:00 the next morning; on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and the New Year period it runs from 8:00 to 8:00 the next morning. If #8000 does not connect, for example from an IP phone, call 03-5285-8898. Tokyo says the advice is only to help you decide, and is not a doctor’s diagnosis. Tokyo does not say whether the line can be used in English.
3. How do I find a clinic that is open now?
Tokyo Metropolitan Government
Tokyo runs a medical information service for foreign patients (外国人患者向け医療情報サービス). Call 03-5285-8181, every day from 9:00 to 20:00, in English, Chinese, Korean, Thai or Spanish. Staff tell you about clinics that can see you in your language and explain the Japanese medical system. The call is free, but you pay the phone charges.
Outside those hours, Tokyo’s Himawari service (ひまわり) at 03-5272-0303 tells you, 24 hours a day, which clinics near you are seeing patients now. You follow voice guidance and press buttons on the phone. The national website Iryo Joho Net (医療情報ネット, “Navii”) also lets you search clinics and pharmacies.
4. Which ward night clinics see children?
Depends on your ward
Night and holiday care for children who do not need to stay in hospital is run by each ward or city. Hours and booking rules differ by ward. These are first-aid clinics. Setagaya, Nerima and Adachi say they do not treat cuts, broken bones or burns, and Nerima asks you to see your usual doctor the next day. Below are six wards we checked. For other wards, see Tokyo’s list or your ward’s page.
None of these ward pages say whether the clinic can see patients in English. If you need English, call the foreign-language line in section 3 first.
