This page is general information from official sources. It is not medical advice. If you think your child’s life is in danger, call 119 for an ambulance. For advice on what to do, call #8000.
Your child has a high fever at 9 p.m., or keeps vomiting on a Sunday, and your usual clinic is closed. In Yamaguchi Prefecture, one prefecture phone line gives advice at night, but the places that see children are run city by city. This guide covers Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Ube, Shunan and Iwakuni.
In short
- Not sure whether to go to a doctor? For a child under 15, call #8000 (every day, 19:00 to 8:00 the next morning).
- Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi and Shunan have a children’s night service every evening. Ube has one only on some nights. Iwakuni has video consultations on two nights.
- Ube City and Iwakuni City changed their hours in 2026. Check the current page or call before you go.
- Injuries such as cuts and broken bones are not seen at the children’s night centers in Yamaguchi City and Shunan City.
- The official pages do not say whether these phone lines or clinics can help in English.
Checked with official pages on October 5, 2026.
1. Who do I call first?
Yamaguchi Prefecture
If you think it is life-threatening, call 119 for an ambulance. If you are not sure, Yamaguchi Prefecture runs two advice lines by phone.
| Line | Who it is for | Hours | Number |
|---|---|---|---|
| #8000 | Children under 15 | Every day, 19:00–8:00 | #8000 or 083-921-2755 |
| #7119 | People about 15 and over | 24 hours | #7119 or 083-921-7119 |
- #8000 (山口県小児救急医療電話相談): a nurse answers, and asks a pediatrician when needed. They advise whether your child should see a doctor. They do not examine or treat. #8000 works from mobile phones and touch-tone landlines. Near the prefecture border, #8000 may connect to another prefecture. If that happens, call 083-921-2755.
- #7119 (山口県救急安心センター): for when you are not sure whether to call an ambulance or go to a hospital now. From IP phones or “Hikari Denwa” lines, call 083-921-7119. Iwakuni City and Waki Town use a different #7119 service run with the Hiroshima area. Iwakuni City says anyone can use it, at any age. From a mobile phone, call 082-246-2000. Hagi City and Abu Town also have their own line. The prefecture says #7119 has no consultation fee; you pay only for the call.
For worries that are not urgent, Yamaguchi Prefecture also offers a free online pediatric consultation for parents who live in the prefecture (小児科オンライン). Night chats on LINE are on weekdays, 18:00–22:00, by booking, up to 10 minutes. You need a prefecture password to register. It is on flyers at city and town health centers, or ask the prefecture’s Medical Policy Division (083-933-2961). The prefecture says to use #8000, not this service, for sudden illness or injury at night.
2. Where can my child be seen at night?
These places give first aid care for children who do not need to stay in hospital. They expect you to see your own doctor the next day. City names link to each section.
| City | Place | Children at night | Phone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shimonoseki | Night Emergency Clinic | Every day, 19:00–23:00 | 083-252-3789 |
| Yamaguchi | Night children’s center, Red Cross Hospital | Every day, 19:00–22:00 | 083-921-8025 |
| Ube | Holiday and Night Emergency Clinic | Tue, Thu, Sat, and Sundays and holidays | 0836-31-1099 |
| Shunan | Shunan Kodomo QQ, Tokuyama Central Hospital | Every day, 19:00–22:00 | 0834-28-9650 |
| Iwakuni | Emergency center, Medical Association Hospital | Thu and Sun, video care, age 4+ | 0827-21-1199 |
Yamaguchi Prefecture says you can find hospitals and clinics open on holidays and at night on Navii (医療情報ネット), the national site run by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. It has an English page, and you can search by the languages a clinic lists: Navii, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
3. Shimonoseki City: Night Emergency Clinic until 23:00
Shimonoseki City
The Shimonoseki City Night Emergency Clinic (下関市夜間急病診療所) sees internal medicine and pediatrics every day, 19:00–23:00. From December 31 to January 3, it is open until midnight. Doctors from clinics and hospitals in the city take turns.
Shimonoseki City says you must call before you come and explain the symptoms. The clinic does not treat injuries such as scrapes, cuts or broken bones; for those, call #7119. A nurse checks how urgent each case is first, so patients are not always seen in order of arrival. Bring proof of your health insurance. Without it, you pay the full cost.
From 23:00 to 8:00, a hospital on duty in the city takes emergencies. Call #7119 to find which hospital, then call that hospital before you go. On Sundays and national holidays, clinics on duty see patients in the daytime, 9:00–18:00 (9:00–17:00 in the Toyoura area).
Address: 2-1-3 Daigakucho, Shimonoseki. Use the clinic’s own parking, not the street. Google Maps. Phone: 083-252-3789.
4. Yamaguchi City: children’s center inside the Red Cross Hospital
Yamaguchi City
The Yamaguchi-Hofu Area Night Children’s Emergency Center (山口・防府地域夜間こども急病センター) is inside Yamaguchi Red Cross Hospital (山口赤十字病院). It is open every day, 19:00–22:00, for illnesses (not injuries) in children from age 0 through junior high school.
- Fill in the hospital’s online questionnaire before you go. It is a web form (WEB問診), open 18:45–22:00, linked from the center’s page.
- If the symptoms are serious, call first. The center asks you to tell them by phone.
- Park in the hospital’s east parking lot. After 19:00 on weekdays and all day on weekends and holidays, the main entrances are closed. Use the holiday and night entrance (休日夜間入口).
- Show your health insurance proof (such as your My Number Card) and your child’s medical certificate at reception. Medicine is given for one day only.
For a child’s injury or a small burn, go to the surgery section of the Yamaguchi City Holiday and Night Emergency Clinic (山口市休日・夜間急病診療所) in Itokome, every day 19:00–22:00, 083-925-2266.
The hospital’s parking is free for 30 minutes and ¥100 up to 2 hours. It is a 5-minute walk from Kami-Yamaguchi Station on the JR Yamaguchi Line. Address: 53-1 Yahatanobaba, Yamaguchi. Google Maps. Phone: 083-921-8025.
5. Ube City: pediatrics on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights
Ube City
From October 1, 2026, the Ube City Holiday and Night Emergency Clinic (宇部市休日・夜間救急診療所) no longer sees children on Monday, Wednesday or Friday nights. Pediatric hours now are:
- Tuesday: 20:00–22:00
- Thursday and Saturday: 18:00–22:00
- Sundays, national holidays, August 14–16 and December 30 to January 3: 9:00–12:00, 13:00–17:00 and 18:00–21:00
The Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday hours do not apply on national holidays, August 14–16 or the New Year period. On those three nights, only pediatrics is open. You cannot book. On Sundays, holidays and the other holiday periods, you can see the current number of people waiting on the clinic’s page. Bring your My Number Card used as a health insurance card, or a Certificate of Eligibility (資格確認書), and your child’s medical expense certificate (福祉医療費受給者証).
Ube City asks parents to see their own doctor during the day if a child seems unwell from the daytime, instead of waiting for the night. Address: 2-1-10 Kotoshibacho, Ube. Google Maps. Phone: 0836-31-1099.
6. Shunan City: Shunan Kodomo QQ every night
Shunan City
Shunan Area Holiday and Night Children’s Emergency Center, known as Shunan Kodomo QQ (周南こどもQQ), is inside Tokuyama Central Hospital (徳山中央病院). It sees illnesses (not injuries) in children aged 0 to 15, through junior high school.
- Every day: 19:00–22:00
- Sundays, national holidays and December 31 to January 3: also 9:00–12:00 and 13:00–17:00
Reception closes 30 minutes before each session ends. The hospital says to come directly during these hours, and that you cannot be seen after reception closes. Medicine is usually for one day, or for the holiday period. Bring your health insurance proof and your child’s medical certificate.
For cuts or broken bones, the surgery section of the Shunan City Holiday and Night Emergency Clinic (周南市休日夜間急病診療所) in Setomicho is open on Sundays, holidays and some other holidays, 0834-39-0099.
The hospital’s parking is free for 30 minutes, then ¥100 per hour. If you are a patient and get your ticket stamped, it is ¥100 for up to 10 hours. Tokuyama Station is about 10 minutes away by taxi. Address: 1-1 Kotacho, Shunan. Google Maps. Phone: 0834-28-9650.
7. Iwakuni City: video consultations on Thursday and Sunday nights
Iwakuni City
The emergency center at Iwakuni Medical Center Medical Association Hospital (岩国市医療センター医師会病院) changed its hours in April 2026, because of a shortage of doctors and other reasons. In-person pediatrics is on Sundays and national holidays, 9:00–12:00.
On Thursday and Sunday nights, 19:00–22:00, children aged 4 and over can have an in-hospital video consultation (来院型オンライン診療). You come to the hospital, a nurse stays with you, and a doctor outside the hospital sees your child on screen.
- Call the emergency center first, 0827-21-1199. They check your child’s age and symptoms. Reception is 19:00–21:30.
- Come with your child. A parent or guardian must come.
- Bring a smartphone. You scan a QR code and fill in the questions on it.
- After the consultation, pay and pick up the medicine at a nearby pharmacy.
Important
Iwakuni City says the video consultation is not for a child who is not fully conscious, has swallowed something, is having a seizure, has trouble breathing, has strong stomach pain, or is injured.
For Sunday clinics on duty, check the city newsletter or the Iwakuni Medical Association’s list. The hospital is about 5 minutes by bus from JR Iwakuni Station, then 2 minutes on foot from the Ishikai Byoin (医師会病院) bus stop. Address: 3-6-12 Muronokicho, Iwakuni. Google Maps. Emergency center: 0827-21-1199.
8. What should I do before I leave home?
- If you are not sure, call #8000 (under 15) or #7119 (about 15 and over) first.
- Call the clinic or center to check tonight’s hours. Shimonoseki’s night clinic and Iwakuni’s video consultation need a call before you come.
- Bring your health insurance proof (My Number Card used as a health insurance card, or a Certificate of Eligibility) and your child’s medical expense certificate.
- For Yamaguchi Red Cross, fill in the web questionnaire. For Iwakuni, bring a smartphone.
- For injuries, go to the surgery section of your city’s emergency clinic, or call #7119.
What to say
子どもが熱を出しました。今から診てもらえますか?
Kodomo ga netsu o dashimashita. Ima kara mite moraemasu ka?
My child has a fever. Can you see my child now?
9. Can I get help in English?
The prefecture’s pages for #8000 and #7119, and the city and hospital pages in this guide, do not say whether they can help in English. Ask when you call. The Navii site (section 2) has an English page and lets you search for clinics by the foreign languages they list.
10. Common questions
Can #8000 tell me which hospital is open?
Iwakuni City says #8000 does not introduce hospitals or clinics. To find who is open, use Navii, your city’s page, or #7119.
Is there a guidebook for parents?
Yes. Yamaguchi Prefecture publishes a guidebook titled “Hikkei! Kodomo Kyukyu” (必携!子ども救急), for children aged 1 month to 6 years. It covers what to do at home and who to call. It is a PDF on the prefecture’s page.
Why does #7119 not connect during a disaster?
When mobile phones use another company’s network in an emergency (JAPAN Roaming), short numbers like #7119 do not work. The prefecture says to call 083-921-7119 instead.
Can my teenager use the children’s center?
The centers in Yamaguchi City and Shunan City are for children up to junior high school. In those two cities, high school students and adults use the internal medicine section of the city’s holiday and night emergency clinic. For advice, they can call #7119.
