How to book bulky waste pickup in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Ube, Shunan and Iwakuni, how each city takes payment, sample fees, and where to take items yourself.

If you are moving out, or a bed or sofa is too big for a garbage bag, you need your city’s bulky waste (粗大ごみ, sodai gomi) service. This guide covers five cities in Yamaguchi Prefecture: Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, Ube, Shunan and Iwakuni. Each city has its own way to book, its own fees and its own way to pay.

In short

  • In all five cities, home pickup must be booked first. You cannot put bulky items out at the normal garbage spot.
  • How you pay depends on the city: buy stickers at a shop (Shimonoseki, Iwakuni), pay at a city office or online (Yamaguchi), or pay cash to the collectors (Ube, Shunan).
  • For a single bed frame, the fee ranges from ¥500 in Shimonoseki to ¥838 in Yamaguchi City.
  • The online booking pages are in Japanese. Section 8 lists words to look for.
  • You can also drive items to a city facility yourself. Most opening days are weekdays, and Shimonoseki City’s facilities are closed on weekends.

Checked with official pages on October 5, 2026.

1. How do the five cities compare?

Pickup is by booking only in all five cities, and each city collects only waste from homes in that city. Waste from a business is not accepted as household bulky waste. The city names link to each section.

City How to book How to pay Single bed frame
Shimonoseki Phone or online Buy stickers at a shop ¥500
Yamaguchi Phone or online City office (cash), or online by card or PayPay ¥838
Ube Ube City LINE or phone Cash at pickup ¥660 (no mattress)
Shunan Phone or online Cash at pickup, pay first at a city office, or card online ¥620
Iwakuni Phone or online, by area Buy stickers at a shop or city office ¥750 (no mattress)

All fees are as the cities list them, with tax included. Each city sorts items by size in a different way, so check your own city’s fee list before you book.

2. Shimonoseki City: book, then buy stickers

Shimonoseki City

  1. Measure the item first. Shimonoseki City sets many fees by size or weight, and the collectors check the size.
  2. Book online or by phone. The online booking site (粗大ごみ等インターネット受付) is open 24 hours. You enter your email address and get a link to start. The Bulky Waste Reception Center (粗大ごみ等受付センター) takes calls Tuesday to Friday, 9:00–17:00, and 9:00–19:00 on the first working day after a closed day. It is closed on weekends, national holidays and December 29 to January 3.
  3. Buy the stickers after you book. The fee is paid with Bulky Waste Stickers (粗大ごみ等処理券) of ¥100, ¥300 and ¥500, sold at supermarkets and convenience stores in the city. Combine them to make the fee. Write your name or booking number on each one.
  4. Put the item out by 8:30 on the pickup day. For a house, put it near the entrance that faces the public road. For an apartment, put it near the ground-floor entrance, or where the building manager says. Never use the garbage station.

You can put out up to 15 items at one time. Each pickup day has a limit, so a full day cannot be chosen. You do not need to be there when they collect. Items of about 50 kg or more are not collected.

Fee examples: a single or semi-double bed frame is ¥500. A chest or shelf with a total of height, width and depth under 200 cm is ¥300 (¥200 if it is plastic and under 150 cm). Since April 1, 2026, baby and child items such as a stroller, tricycle or child car seat are ¥100 each.

Air conditioners, TVs, fridges, freezers, washing machines and clothes dryers cannot be booked online. Call the center. These items normally go back to the shop that sells them. The city collects them only in some cases, such as a move far away, and you also need a recycling ticket from the post office. Bulky Waste Reception Center: 083-254-5380.

3. Yamaguchi City: pay first, then a sticker is issued

Yamaguchi City

Yamaguchi City asks people who can carry items themselves to take them to a city facility (section 7). Home pickup is for items that do not fit in the city garbage bag, and for non-burnable or metal items with one side of 1 m or more.

  1. Check the item, its size and the number of items. Ask for about 10 items or fewer per pickup day. Items with a side over 2 m, or over 50 kg, are not collected.
  2. Book online or by phone. With the online booking system (粗大ごみ収集予約システム), you pay online by credit card or PayPay. By phone, call the Cleaning Office (清掃事務所) on weekdays, 8:30–17:00, and pay in cash.
  3. If you booked by phone, pay at the city office you are told. You get a pickup notice and a bulky waste sticker (粗大ごみシール). Pay at least two working days before pickup, or the booking is cancelled.
  4. Put the item outside on the pickup day, with the sticker on it. Items without a sticker are not collected.

The collectors do not go inside your home. The place must be outdoors, where a 2-ton truck can drive in and turn. You do not need to be there, and you cannot choose a time. The city says pickup takes about one to two weeks after you book.

Fee examples: a chair is ¥419. A chest of drawers under 150 cm high is ¥838. A single or semi-double bed frame is ¥838. Cleaning Office: 083-941-0053.

4. Ube City: book on LINE, pay cash at pickup

Ube City

Ube City collects large household items, such as furniture over 1 m long, 50 cm wide or 10 kg, when you cannot take them to a city facility yourself.

  1. Book on Ube City’s official LINE account, or by phone. Since October 1, 2025, you can add the account as a friend, enter your details, and choose a date, time and items, 24 hours a day. For items not listed on LINE, call the Waste Management Division (廃棄物対策課).
  2. Put the item where a truck can stop, by the booked time.
  3. Be there at pickup, and pay in cash. Ube City asks you to be present at pickup, and the fee is paid in cash then.

You can have only one booking at a time. Make the next booking on or after the day after your pickup is done. For a large amount of waste from a move, the city points you to a waste hauler licensed by the city.

Fee examples: a chair is ¥220. A chest of drawers under 90 cm high is ¥440, or ¥1,100 if 90 cm or higher. A single bed without the mattress is ¥660. A TV, fridge, washing machine or air conditioner is ¥2,860, and you must buy a recycling ticket at the post office first. Waste Management Division: 0836-33-7291.

5. Shunan City: pay cash at pickup, or by card online

Shunan City

  1. Book by phone or online. Call the Recycling Promotion Division (リサイクル推進課), or use the online booking system (粗大ごみ戸別収集予約システム), open 24 hours. Online, you can book from one month to seven days before the pickup day.
  2. Book up to five items per household at a time. If you have more, book again after the first pickup.
  3. Put the items outdoors on the ground floor, where the truck can load them. This also applies to apartments.
  4. Pay. The usual way is cash to the staff at pickup, so be at home. If you cannot be home, pay first at the main city office or the Shinnanyo, Kumage or Kano branch office. A credit card can be used only for online bookings.

Pickup is on weekdays, in the morning (about 8:30–11:30) or the afternoon (about 13:00–15:30). You cannot add items on the day.

Fee examples: a chair (not a sofa-type chair) is ¥200. A chest of drawers under 90 cm high is ¥620. A single bed is ¥620. Recycling Promotion Division (pickup): 0834-61-0310.

6. Iwakuni City: book by area, then buy stickers

Iwakuni City

Iwakuni City has a set bulky waste pickup day for each area. Find yours in the garbage collection calendar (ごみ収集カレンダー).

  1. Book at least seven days before your area’s pickup day. Since April 1, 2026, you can book online, with a separate form for each area, linked from the city’s bulky waste page. By phone, the Iwakuni area calls the Environment Office (環境事業所) on weekdays, 8:15–17:00. The Yu, Shuto, Kuga, Nishiki, Mikawa, Miwa and Hongo areas call their own branch office.
  2. Agree on the items, the place and the fee. You can put out up to 10 items at one time. You get a booking number.
  3. Buy stickers. Bulky waste stickers (粗大ごみ収集券) come in ¥250 and ¥500. They are sold at city branch offices (出張所) and at shops such as supermarkets. The city lists the shops on its sticker outlets page. Write your booking number and name on them.
  4. Put the items out at the agreed time and place. This is usually by the entrance of the building. The collectors do not carry items out from inside. You do not need to be there.

Fee examples: a chest of drawers, cupboard or bookshelf under 1 m high is ¥500, or ¥1,000 if 1 m or higher. A single or semi-double bed without the mattress is ¥750. Futons are ¥250. Air conditioners, TVs, fridges, freezers, washing machines and clothes dryers are not taken as bulky waste. Environment Office: 0827-31-7710.

7. Can I take it to a city facility myself?

Yes, in all five cities, if you can bring it by car. You unload the items yourself, and the fee is usually set by weight. Yamaguchi, Ube, Shunan and Iwakuni accept only waste that comes from homes in their own city.

8. What do I look for on the Japanese booking pages?

The online booking sites for Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi City and Shunan City are in Japanese. These words appear on the city pages and booking sites.

  • 粗大ごみ (sodai gomi): bulky waste
  • 戸別収集 (kobetsu shushu): pickup at your home
  • 新規申込み / 予約: new booking
  • 品目: item type. Choose the item, then its size.
  • 収集日: pickup day
  • 処理券 / シール / 収集券: the fee sticker you put on each item
  • 自己搬入 / 持ち込み (jiko hannyu / mochikomi): taking waste to a facility yourself

Yamaguchi City also has a garbage sorting poster in English, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese on its foreign residents page. It covers everyday sorting, not bulky waste booking.

9. Common questions

Can I change or cancel a Shimonoseki City booking?

Yes. Shimonoseki City’s FAQ says you can add or remove items online until three working days before pickup. You can cancel the whole booking until the day before. You need the booking number from the email and your phone number.

Where do I buy Shimonoseki City’s stickers, and what if the fee is ¥700?

They are sold at convenience stores and supermarkets in the city. Combine the ¥100, ¥300 and ¥500 stickers to make the fee, like postage stamps. The city’s example is a ¥500 fee paid with one ¥300 sticker and two ¥100 stickers. Buy them only after your booking is complete, because they are not refunded.

Can I get a refund for Yamaguchi City’s sticker?

No. Yamaguchi City says the stickers are not refunded or reissued. If your booking changes, tell the Cleaning Office at least two working days before pickup.

What if my item is too big or heavy for pickup?

Yamaguchi City, Ube City, Shimonoseki City and Iwakuni City point you to a waste hauler licensed by the city, for a fee. Yamaguchi City warns not to ask anyone without a license to collect or carry your waste.
