For a day when you want to soak with just your family or partner, here are 14 private baths (kashikiri-yu) in Beppu that you can use without staying overnight. Prices run roughly ¥2,000 to ¥3,000 per room per hour. Most of Beppu’s private baths cannot be booked — you wait your turn on the day — and only four take reservations: Hyotan Onsen, Beppu Sakurayu, Kashikiri Onsen Ofuyu and Daibutsu Onsen. Since whether you can book, and how long each turn lasts, changes which bath suits your day, this guide lists both up front.
Because these are private baths used only by your own group, they are usually a practical option if you have tattoos. Rules still vary by facility though, so it is worth asking when you book or when you arrive.
In short
- Only four baths take bookings: Hyotan Onsen, Beppu Sakurayu, Ofuyu and Daibutsu Onsen. The rest are walk-in, first come first served (section 6).
- Hyotan Onsen’s family baths all have their own steam room; each room is set for 3 adults from ¥2,400/60 min (section 1).
- Ofuyu takes web bookings 24 hours a day and lends a large face towel free per person, with no extra charge for babies (section 4).
- Private baths, used only by your own group, are generally a practical choice if you have tattoos — but ask each facility, since rules differ.
Facts are carried over from our Japanese guide, checked September 28, 2026.

Among Beppu’s public “shiei” hot springs, only Shibaseki Onsen has a family bath; other municipal baths’ prices and hours are in our Japanese guide to Beppu’s 15 municipal hot springs, Kannawa’s communal baths are in Kannawa’s communal baths and steam baths, and day-use large baths are in 14 day-use baths in Oita.

Common questions
Can I use a private bath if I have a tattoo?
Because a private bath is used only by your own group, it’s generally a practical option if you have tattoos, but rules still vary by facility. None of the 14 facilities in this guide state on their official pages that they refuse guests with tattoos, but it’s worth confirming when you book or when you arrive, especially for the large communal baths some of them also offer.
Are towels provided?
At most facilities you bring your own or buy one. Hyotan Onsen sells a towel for ¥250 and rents a bath towel for ¥200; Oniishi no Yu sells one for ¥200 and rents one for ¥150; Yuya Ebisu has a towel set for ¥400. Ofuyu lends one large face towel per person free.
Is there an extra charge for children?
Many places charge by the room regardless of headcount. Where it does scale with people, it’s Hyotan Onsen (over 3 adults: ¥700 age 13+, ¥300 age 4–12, free age 3 and under), Shibaseki Onsen (over 4 people: ¥400 per hour per person), and Daibutsu Onsen (per person, free for preschoolers). Ofuyu has no extra charge for infants.
How long is one turn?
Mostly 60 minutes. Beppu Ogura and Daibutsu Onsen are 45 minutes; Mugen no Sato is 50 minutes on weekends/holidays; Beppu Sakurayu gives 90 minutes on weekdays; Hyotan Onsen offers 75- and 90-minute options; Ofuyu also has 90- and 120-minute courses. For extensions: Hyotan Onsen only takes requests on weekdays, Okatanoyu charges half price per 30 minutes, and Shibaseki Onsen adds ¥1,000 for going over an hour.
How many people fit in a room?
Oniishi no Yu and Shibaseki Onsen fit up to 4; Beppu Ogura up to 3; Mugen no Sato 3 or 4 depending on the room. Okatanoyu has no fixed limit, suggesting up to 6 adults for the open-air/half-open-air rooms and up to 4 for the indoor rooms.
