Compare six children's halls (jidokan) in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo: walk from the station, free play-group days for babies and toddlers, and what needs sign-up.

If you live in Setagaya Ward in Tokyo with a baby or a toddler, a ward children’s hall (児童館, jidokan) is a place to play indoors with your child, on a rainy day or any other day. The ward says anyone can use its children’s halls, from babies with a parent up to junior and senior high school students, and its page on drop-in play groups says they are free. This guide compares six of them, at least one in each of the ward’s five areas, on play-group days, walking time from the station and whether you need to sign up.

In short

  • Five of the six are “Puresupo” halls (プレスポ), which also support junior and senior high school students. The sixth, Okusawa, is only for pre-school children and their parents.
  • The baby and toddler play groups (ひろば, hiroba) are drop-in. Registered play circles and Okusawa’s first-visit baby session need sign-up.
  • Most groups run on weekday mornings from 10:30, and each group is for a set age. Match the day to your child’s age using the table and the sections below.
  • The five Puresupo halls are closed on Mondays, the 2nd and 4th Sundays, public holidays (the ward lists May 5 as an exception) and the New Year break. Okusawa is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (open on the 2nd Saturday).

1. How do the children’s halls work?

Setagaya Ward

The ward says a children’s hall is a place that raises children to be healthy and rich in spirit through play. You can use one from age 0, and babies and toddlers need an adult with them. The ward lists the halls’ opening hours as 9:30–18:00, and says some rooms and play may be limited for about an hour at lunchtime between 12:00 and 13:30.

Each hall runs a weekly “hiroba” (ひろば), a drop-in play session for babies, toddlers and their parents. The ward says these sessions have programs such as nursery songs, finger play, crafts and active play. The ward’s “Odekake Hiroba” (おでかけひろば) page says these play groups are free, though events may need a small actual cost, and that they are also held at children’s halls.

Note

For events for elementary school children and older, the hall pages say the child must sign up in person at the hall, and no one can sign up for them. The pages give no sign-up step for the baby and toddler drop-in groups. The ward website has a “Foreign Language” menu, but the pages we read do not say whether hall staff speak English.

8. Which hall should I choose?

Setagaya Ward

Start with your child’s age and the day you are free.

  • Age 0. Tuesday: Dandelion Hiroba at Ikejiri (ages 0–1). Wednesday: Hinatabokko at Tamagawadai (age 0), Piyopiyo Hiroba at Kasuya (age 0) and Hidamari Hiroba at Kitami (ages 0–1). Tuesday and Thursday: Hokahoka Hiroba at Okusawa (ages 0–1).
  • Close to a station. Daita is a 1-minute walk from Shindaita Station. Tamagawadai is a 5-minute walk from Yoga Station.
  • Older siblings. The five Puresupo halls also serve school-age children and teenagers, so they suit a family with an older child. Okusawa is only for pre-school children.
  • Monday. The five Puresupo halls are closed on Mondays. Okusawa is open on Mondays.

Common questions

Do I need to book?

The drop-in play groups do not say that you need to book. Registered play circles need registration first, and Okusawa’s First-time Baby Time needs sign-up. The ward’s Odekake Hiroba page says some places need a booking and some do not, so call the hall if you are unsure.

Can my child go alone?

No, not for babies and toddlers. They must come with an adult. At Tamagawadai, a child can use the hall alone from the first year of elementary school.

Does it cost money?

The ward says the Odekake Hiroba play groups are free, though events may need a small actual cost. Check the hall’s notice for each event.

Where can I see the full list of halls?

The ward’s list of children’s halls (Japanese) has the opening hours and closing days. The Odekake Hiroba page (Japanese) lists other drop-in places across the ward’s five areas.
