If you are moving or throwing out a bed, desk or bicycle, it does not go out with the normal garbage. Each city in Japan has its own bulky waste (粗大ごみ, sodai gomi) service, and the rules change at the city border. This guide compares the five most populous cities in Tama, Tokyo: Hachioji, Machida, Fuchu, Chofu and Nishitokyo. If you live in one of the 23 wards, see the guide to bulky waste in Tokyo’s wards.
In short
- In all five cities you book a pickup first. You cannot just put a bed or a desk out on the collection day.
- Booking can be done online in Hachioji, Machida, Fuchu and Chofu. Nishitokyo takes a web form, email or phone. Fuchu, Hachioji and Chofu are open 24 hours online.
- Fees differ a lot. A microwave oven is ¥400 in Machida and ¥1,000 in Fuchu.
- Machida’s pickup fees for some items go up for applications from January 1, 2027.
- You can drive items to a facility yourself in Hachioji, Machida, Chofu and (for Nishitokyo residents) the Ryusenen union. Fuchu suspended direct drop-off from April 1, 2025, and its current page states no end date.
- All booking pages are in Japanese. Section 8 lists words to look for, and section 9 lists the English guides each city offers.
Checked with official pages on October 11, 2026.
1. How do the five cities compare?
All five cities collect only household waste, and you must book before the pickup day. Waste from a shop or an office is not accepted as household bulky waste. The city names link to each section.
| City | Phone booking | Online booking | Drop-off yourself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hachioji | Mon–Fri 8:30–17:15 | 24 hours | 3 sites, ¥350 per 10 kg |
| Machida | Mon–Sat 8:30–17:00 | Yes (hours not stated) | Booking needed, ¥250 per 10 kg |
| Fuchu | Mon–Sat 8:00–19:00 | 24 hours | Suspended from April 2025 (no end date stated) |
| Chofu | Mon–Fri 8:30–17:15 | 24 hours | Booking needed, ¥300 per 10 kg |
| Nishitokyo | Mon–Sat 8:30–18:00 | Web form or email | Ryusenen union, no booking, ¥380 per 10 kg |
All five are closed for phone bookings at year-end and New Year. Machida is also closed on public holidays, and Nishitokyo on Sundays and public holidays. Online 24-hour service excludes maintenance times.
2. What does pickup cost for common items?
The same item can cost up to 2.5 times more depending on the city: a microwave oven is ¥400 in Machida and ¥1,000 in Fuchu. The tables pick the same four items from each city’s own fee list (pickup fees, in yen). The categories are not identical, so read the notes under each table.
| City | Microwave | Bicycle |
|---|---|---|
| Hachioji | ¥500 | ¥500 |
| Machida | ¥400 | ¥800 |
| Fuchu | ¥1,000 | ¥1,000 |
| Chofu | ¥945 | ¥630 |
| Nishitokyo | ¥500 | ¥1,000 |
The bicycle is an adult bicycle: wheels of 24 inches or more in Machida, 20 inches or more in Fuchu, and 19 inches or more in Chofu and Nishitokyo. Hachioji has one “bicycle” category.
| City | Bed | Desk |
|---|---|---|
| Hachioji | ¥1,000 | ¥1,000 |
| Machida | ¥1,200 | ¥2,000 |
| Fuchu | ¥2,000 | ¥2,000 |
| Chofu | ¥2,205 | ¥1,890 |
| Nishitokyo | ¥1,000 | ¥1,000 |
For beds, Hachioji and Machida list the bed frame only (Hachioji: single to double size, must be taken apart). Fuchu’s ¥2,000 is a bed with base boards, and the mattress and tatami are charged separately. Chofu’s ¥2,205 is a single bed frame plus mattress, and the frame alone is ¥1,260. Nishitokyo’s ¥1,000 is a bed without springs or an electric mechanism.
For desks, Machida, Fuchu and Chofu list a desk with drawers on both sides. Hachioji’s category includes one side-drawer unit, and Nishitokyo’s includes study desks. Nishitokyo says its amounts are a guide, and the real fee can change with weight, size and length.
3. Hachioji: three drop-off sites and two ticket values
Hachioji City
- Book online or by phone. The online booking site is open 24 hours. By phone, call the Bulky Waste Call Center on 0570-550-530 and press 1. If that number does not work for you, call 042-696-5377. Phone hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30–17:15, closed December 31 to January 3.
- Book up to 10 items at a time. The city tells you the fee, the pickup date and a booking number. City staff may check the place before pickup.
- Pay. Pay online by the day before pickup, if you booked online. Or buy Bulky Waste Disposal Tickets (粗大ごみ処理券) of ¥500 and ¥100 at a shop. The city says payment is generally in cash, and the tickets have no expiry date.
- Put the item out by 8:30 on the pickup day. Use the place you were given. Write the booking number and the pickup date on each ticket, or on a sheet of paper if you paid online, and attach it to each item.
You do not need to be there. Collectors work from 8:30 and finish around 15:00, in any weather. Shops near the city border may sell tickets of another city, so the city asks you to check before you buy.
Drop-off. The city has three sites: Tobuki Clean Center (戸吹クリーンセンター) and Tachi Clean Center (館クリーンセンター), open Monday to Friday 8:30–16:30 (public holidays included, closed December 31 to January 3), and Tama Cleaning Plant (多摩清掃工場) in Tama City. Tama Cleaning Plant is open Monday to Friday and on the fourth Sunday of each month, 8:30–11:30 and 13:00–16:30, and only residents of listed neighborhoods can use it. The fee is ¥350 for up to 10 kg and ¥350 for each further 10 kg. A spring mattress is ¥1,900 extra per piece.
You need a booking for drop-off too. Online, you can book until just before you arrive. By phone, book by the day before. You get a 30-minute time slot. Use a private car (business vehicles and rental cars from stores are not accepted), and bring a driver’s license or My Number Card. Pay cash on the spot. Only Tobuki also takes card, e-money and QR payments.
Sites: Tobuki Clean Center, 1916 Tobuki-machi, Hachioji (Google Maps) and Tachi Clean Center, 2700 Tachi-machi, Hachioji (Google Maps). Call Center: 0570-550-530.
4. Machida: one ticket value, and a fee change in 2027
Machida City
- Book online or by phone. The city’s bulky waste line is 042-797-1651, run by the Machida Eco Life Promotion Corporation (まちだエコライフ推進公社). It is open Monday to Saturday, 8:30–17:00, closed on public holidays and from December 31 to January 3. You can also book on the corporation’s website. Booking is first come, first served.
- Know the size and number of items. The staff ask for each item, its size and the number. After an online booking, they may call you back, so enter a number you can answer in the daytime.
- Buy tickets after you book. Machida has one ticket value, ¥400. Buy the number of tickets you were told. They cannot be refunded after purchase.
- Put the item out by 8:30 on the pickup day. Write the booking number and the pickup date on each ticket and stick it on the item.
The city says pickups are very busy and take longer to schedule, so book early. Phone lines are busiest on Mondays and Tuesdays, and every day between noon and 13:00.
For applications from January 1, 2027, some pickup fees go up. A desk with drawers on both sides rises from ¥2,000 to ¥2,400. A single or semi-double bed frame rises from ¥1,200 to ¥1,600. A microwave oven (¥400) and a bicycle of 24 inches or more (¥800) stay the same. Applications made by December 31, 2026 use the current fees, and the drop-off fee does not change.
Drop-off. Go to Machida City Bio Energy Center (町田市バイオエネルギーセンター). It is open Monday to Saturday, 8:30–11:30 and 13:00–16:00, closed on Sundays, public holidays and December 31 to January 3. You must book, online or by phone, up to two months ahead. For the same day, book by 10:30 for the morning and by 15:00 for the afternoon. The fee is ¥250 per 10 kg, paid in cash at an automatic machine. Tickets cannot be used. The staff check your address with a driver’s license or similar, and you unload the items yourself.
Site: Machida City Bio Energy Center, 3160 Shimooyamada-machi, Machida (Google Maps). Booking line: 042-797-1651.
5. Fuchu: phone booking until 19:00; drop-off suspended in 2025
Fuchu City
- Check the size. The city counts an item as bulky waste if its longest side is 40 cm or more (30 cm or more for electrical items, 80 cm or more for rod-shaped items).
- Book online or by phone. The online booking site is open 24 hours. The Fuchu Bulky Waste Call Center is 03-6424-4645, open Monday to Saturday, 8:00–19:00, closed at year-end and New Year. It is busy on Mondays and after long holidays.
- Pay. Buy bulky waste stickers (粗大ごみシール) at a city facility or a shop on the city’s list. If you booked online, you can pay online by credit card or PayPay instead, and you need no sticker.
- Put the item out by 8:00 on the pickup day. Write the booking number and the pickup date on each sticker. With online payment, write the booking number, the date and the amount on a sheet of paper and attach it to each item.
Book by 19:00 three days before pickup by phone, or four days before online (not counting Sundays and year-end and New Year). You can cancel by 19:00 the day before. Booking is first come, first served, and the city sets a limit of 15 items per day. Online payment must be completed by 19:00 three days before pickup. If you pay online and then change the items or the date, you pay again. After the cancellation deadline, an online payment is not refunded.
Fuchu does not collect TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines or clothes dryers. Waste from a business is not collected either. For a large amount at once, the city points you to a licensed collector.
Drop-off. The city’s newsletter of January 27, 2025 said that direct drop-off of bulky waste at the Recycling Plaza (リサイクルプラザ) would be suspended from April 1, 2025, because of reconstruction work. The city’s current bulky waste page (updated October 1, 2026) describes pickup only, and no end date for the suspension is stated there. Ask the Call Center before you plan to drive items there.
6. Chofu: pickup can take over a month; drop-off is Monday to Saturday
Chofu City
- Book online or by phone. The online booking site is open 24 hours. The Bulky Waste Reception Center is 042-306-7731, open Monday to Friday, 8:30–17:15, closed at year-end and New Year. Dial the area code 042 even from inside Chofu.
- Book up to 10 items per household per pickup day. The city says it can take more than a month from booking to pickup, so book well ahead. Changes are possible up to three days before (not counting Saturdays, Sundays and year-end and New Year). A phone booking can be changed only by phone.
- Buy tickets. Chofu’s Specific Waste Disposal Tickets (特定廃棄物処理券) are stickers of ¥315 and ¥630. Buy them at a shop on the city’s list. Only tickets issued by Chofu are valid.
- Put the item out by 8:00 on the pickup day. Write the date and your name or booking number on the ticket (add your room number in an apartment) and attach it to each item. You do not need to be there, and you cannot choose a time.
Drop-off. Take items to Chofu City Clean Center (調布市クリーンセンター), Monday to Saturday (public holidays included, closed at year-end and New Year), 9:00–12:00 and 13:30–16:30. You must book by the day before (not counting Saturdays, Sundays and year-end and New Year). The limits are one slot per household per day and 10 visits per fiscal year. The fee is ¥300 per 10 kg including tax, cash only. Use your own car or one rental car (trucks up to 2 tons). The person who booked, or a family member living with them, comes with a driver’s license or similar, and unloads the items alone.
Site: Chofu City Clean Center, 2-1-1 Nomizu, Chofu (Google Maps). Reception Center: 042-306-7731.
7. Nishitokyo: form, email or phone, and a drop-off at Ryusenen
Nishitokyo City
- Book by web form, email or phone. Use the application form, send an email to uketuke@nishitokyo-sodai.jp with the subject 粗大申込, or call the Bulky Waste Reception Center on 042-421-5411. Phone hours are Monday to Saturday, 8:30–18:00. The center is closed on Sundays, public holidays and at year-end and New Year.
- Give the item, number and size. Tell them the height, width and depth, and the material. The limit is five items per booking, in principle. The center tells you the pickup date, and you cannot choose it.
- Buy stickers after the booking is confirmed. Buy bulky waste stickers (粗大ごみ処理シール) at a city sales point. The amount depends on the item, and stickers are not refunded. Shops that sell stickers cannot take a booking.
- Put the item out on the pickup day. Write your name and the pickup date on the sticker and attach it to each item. Place the item on your own property where it can be seen from outside. Do not use the road or the garbage station.
Collectors do not go into your home. If you live on the second floor or higher, bring the item down to the ground floor. Nishitokyo does not collect spring mattresses, sofas or pianos, or appliances covered by the home appliance recycling law. Other cities’ stickers are not accepted.
Drop-off. Residents of Kiyose, Higashikurume and Nishitokyo can take household waste to the Ryusenen union (柳泉園組合) in Higashikurume City. It is open Monday to Friday, public holidays included, 8:30–11:30 and 13:00–16:30. You need no booking. The fee is ¥380 per 10 kg, cash only. Fill in a waste disposal request form at the desk (you can download it in advance) and show a driver’s license or a utility bill that shows your address. Enter by the north gate on the Shin-Tokorozawa Kaido side.
Site: Ryusenen union, 4-3-10 Shimosato, Higashikurume (Google Maps). Phone for non-burnable and bulky waste: 042-470-1552.
8. What do I look for on the Japanese booking pages?
The booking sites for all five cities are in Japanese. The official city pages do not mention an English version of the booking screens, and they do not say whether staff on the phone can speak English. These words appear on the pages.
- 粗大ごみ (sodai gomi): bulky waste
- 収集 (shushu): pickup. 持ち込み (mochikomi): taking items to a facility yourself
- 品目 / 品目一覧 (hinmoku): item type. Search for the item, then choose the size.
- 申込 / 予約 (moshikomi / yoyaku): booking
- 受付番号 (uketsuke bango): booking number. You write it on the ticket.
- 収集日 (shushubi): pickup day
- 処理券 / シール (shori-ken / shiru): the ticket or sticker for the fee
- 手数料 (tesuryo): fee
9. Is there an English guide from the city?
These guides cover everyday garbage sorting. Check the city page for the bulky waste details above.
- Hachioji: a nine-language booklet on how to put out garbage and recyclables, including English, on the city’s page. It does not list collection days. The city’s pages also have an English button that translates the page automatically.
- Machida: the Machida garbage sorting app works in 11 languages including English, and shows where to buy bulky waste tickets (city page).
- Fuchu: a garbage sorting guidebook in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean. The city says it may contain some outdated information.
- Chofu: an English leaflet (PDF) that includes a page on bulky garbage. The Chofu Garbage Navi (調布ごみナビ) LINE service supports 13 languages and can show the bulky waste fee and open the booking page (city page).
- Nishitokyo: an English, Chinese and Korean booklet that covers bulky waste and hard-to-process items.
10. Common questions
Can I put out an air conditioner, TV, refrigerator or washing machine?
Machida, Fuchu, Chofu and Nishitokyo say they do not collect these appliances, which fall under the home appliance recycling law. The Ryusenen union does not accept them either. For Hachioji, check the city’s list of items that cannot be booked before you apply.
What if my item is not on the fee list?
Hachioji’s list says the Garbage Consultation Center (0570-550-530) will tell you the item type and fee. Machida points you to its bulky waste line (042-797-1651). Fuchu takes items that cannot be judged online by phone only.
Can I change or cancel a booking?
In Fuchu, changes by 19:00 three days before (phone) or four days before (online), and cancellation by 19:00 the day before. In Chofu, changes up to three days before pickup. For Machida, call the booking line.
I live in an apartment. Where do I put the item?
Chofu asks for a place that is easy to reach from the road, such as the bulky waste area on the ground floor or the main entrance, and you decide it when you book. Nishitokyo asks you to use your building’s designated place and to bring the item to the ground floor. Hachioji confirms the place with you when you book.
How many items can I book at once?
Hachioji accepts up to 10 items per booking, Chofu up to 10 per household per pickup day, and Nishitokyo five in principle. Fuchu limits applications to 15 items per day. Machida does not state a limit.
